A Tasting Room Experience for the Whole Family

While wine tasting is for those twenty-one and older (in the US at least!), sometimes families find themselves on an outing with small children.  Making a tasting room family-friendly can be key to getting tasters in the door, especially on weekends.  Doing so involves creating a welcoming atmosphere for parents and children alike while maintaining the sophisticated charm of the winery. Here are some suggestions to make sure families feel welcome:

1. Balance Adult and Family Spaces

Dedicate one area of the tasting room or outdoor space to families while keeping another area quieter for adults-only visitors.  This provides parties with and without children to feel comfortable and not worry that they are disturbing others.  If space permits, add outdoor activities like a sandbox, lawn games (cornhole is a good option!), or picnic tables near shaded areas.  This provides space for the children while also giving the adults space to enjoy the tasting experience at their own pace.

2. Offer Non-Alcoholic Options

Serve juice, sparkling water, or kid-friendly mocktails in fancy glasses to make everyone feel included.  Designated drivers and non-drinkers will appreciate this as well.  Additionally, offer simple, child-friendly snacks like crackers, cheese, fruit, or sandwiches.

3. Accommodating Seating and Facilities

Use sturdy, easy-to-clean tables and chairs that accommodate large parties.  This will ensure families feel comfortable occupying a whole table.  A mixed-use area where people can either stand or sit is a great way to create a less formal arrangement for families, and helps provide space for strollers and high chairs.

4. Provide Family-Friendly Entertainment

Host family-focused events like grape-stomping, harvest festivals, or craft workshops.  This allows under 21s to participate in the outing without feeling left out.  A vineyard tour tailored to kids can provide a chance to learn about farming and nature. If your tasting room hosts performances, include some that cater to families like acoustic or upbeat bands.

5. Communicate Family-Friendly Policies

Clearly state that your tasting room is family-friendly and list amenities for children and under 21s.  If you have activities available for all ages, make this key selling point on both your webstore and third party reservation platforms.  Include pictures of families enjoying the space and spending time together.

By creating a thoughtful and balanced environment, you can make your tasting room appealing to families without compromising the winery’s ambiance.
